- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for custard)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Mix flour, sugar, and butter until crumbly. Add egg and vanilla to form dough.
- Press dough into greased 8×8 inch pan and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch in a saucepan. Gradually add milk and cream and cook over medium heat, stirring until thickened (5-7 minutes).
- Remove custard from heat, stir in vanilla, cool slightly, then pour over baked base.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, cut into squares, and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the base is golden brown but not burnt.
- Allow the custard to cool slightly before pouring to prevent melting the base.
