  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for custard)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Mix flour, sugar, and butter until crumbly. Add egg and vanilla to form dough.
  2. Press dough into greased 8×8 inch pan and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Whisk egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch in a saucepan. Gradually add milk and cream and cook over medium heat, stirring until thickened (5-7 minutes).
  4. Remove custard from heat, stir in vanilla, cool slightly, then pour over baked base.
  5. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, cut into squares, and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
