Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound Italian sausage (sweet or hot, depending on preference)
- 12 ounces pasta (penne or rigatoni works great)
- 1 can crushed tomatoes (28 ounces)
- 1 medium onion (chopped)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
- Parmesan cheese for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Start by cooking the pasta according to package instructions. Make sure to salt the water for flavor. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Next, add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Now, add the Italian sausage to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir in the oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 10 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and toss to combine everything well. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of pasta water.
- Garnish with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
