  • 1 pound Italian sausage (sweet or hot, depending on preference)
  • 12 ounces pasta (penne or rigatoni works great)
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (28 ounces)
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)
  • Parmesan cheese for serving (optional)

Instructions

  • Start by cooking the pasta according to package instructions. Make sure to salt the water for flavor. Drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Next, add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Now, add the Italian sausage to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir in the oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 10 minutes to meld the flavors.
  • Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and toss to combine everything well. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of pasta water.
  • Garnish with fresh basil and Parmesan cheese if desired. Serve hot and enjoy!
