Description

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is the ultimate comfort food, featuring juicy, well-seasoned hamburger patties smothered in rich brown gravy and baked to perfection. A classic Amish dish, this hearty meal pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, buttered corn, or homemade bread, making it an ideal family dinner option.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Patties
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Gently combine and form into oval-shaped patties.

  • Sear the Patties
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and melt butter. Sear the patties for about 3 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove and set aside.

  • Make the Gravy
In the same skillet, add butter and flour. Stir continuously for 1-2 minutes, then slowly whisk in beef broth and heavy cream. Simmer until thickened.

  • Assemble and Bake
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place seared patties in a baking dish, pour the gravy over, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for 10 more minutes.

Notes

  • Use quality ground beef for the juiciest patties.
  • For a thicker gravy, mix 1 tsp cornstarch with water and add to the sauce.
  • Make it ahead by preparing the patties and gravy a day in advance.
  • For a slow cooker version, cook on low for 4-5 hours or high for 2-3 hours.
