Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 ¼ teaspoons)
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 8 ounces mozzarella cheese (cut into sticks)
- ½ cup baking soda
- 1 large egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt, for sprinkling
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by combining warm water and sugar, then sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix flour and salt, then add the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let the dough rise in a greased bowl covered with a damp cloth for about 1 hour, until doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into 8 pieces, roll into ropes, place a mozzarella stick in the center, fold and twist into pretzel shapes.
- Boil 10 cups of water with baking soda and carefully add pretzels for 30 seconds each.
- Preheat oven to 425°F, place boiled pretzels on a lined baking sheet, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the pretzels cool for a few minutes before enjoying!
Notes
- Ensure water temperature is correct for yeast activation.
- Experiment with different cheeses if desired.
