Instructions

  2. Combine cherries, brown sugar, and water in a saucepan; simmer for 5-7 minutes and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, mix melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients, stirring until just mixed.
  6. Pour cherry mixture into a greased 9-inch cake pan, then add the chocolate batter on top.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, checking with a toothpick for doneness.
  8. Cool for 15 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
